A Brief History of the Myers' Cocktail

The “Myers’ Cocktail” is an intravenous (IV) nutrient therapy created by John Myers, MD in the 1960’s. The name cocktail comes from the fact that Dr. Myers never completely disclosed his perfected recipe of vitamins and minerals, and I like to think from the immediate positive boost you can feel both physically and mentally after receiving one.

When Dr. Myers passed away, many of his patients sought out nutrient injection treatment from Dr. Alan Gaby, MD. Gaby formulated his own version of the IV Myers' cocktail from the information he had gathered and from years of effectively treating: asthma, migraines, fatigue, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, muscle spasms, acute infections, chronic sinusitis, and seasonal allergies.

Benefits were also noted, in some cases, of congestive heart failure, angina, chronic urticaria, hyperthyroidism, and dysmenorrhea. Interestingly, many healthy patients requested periodic injections to enhance overall well being and support/boost their current state.

IV Therapy at Integrative

At Integrative, we offer a variety of IV therapies which are often individualized to a patient's specific needs. The most popular in our lab remains the IV Myers cocktail. We formulate ours with vitamin C, vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin B5 (dexpanthenol), B6 (pyridoxine), B12 (methylcobalamin), calcium, magnesium, and selenium in a base of normal saline.

Modifications to the proportion of vitamins and minerals or addition of homeopathics can always be considered on a case by case basis. Patients consistently report feeling increased energy, decreased stress, a more relaxed mental and physical state, and better resistance to colds and cases of flu from the immune supportive properties of these nutrients.

More serious conditions can also be aided by IV Myers but may be better treated with more complex IV nutrient formulations. Our standard Myers cocktail comes in a small bag as an IV drip so you can put your feet up, relax, and enjoy the beautiful view from our clinic for 20-40 minutes.
