Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) for Hair Loss

Wellness, Health, Regenerative Medicine

Hair loss can be difficult for anyone, at any age. The causes of hair shedding and loss vary, as well as the treatment plan. However, in many cases, utilizing regenerative technology like Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) can support hair regrowth and scalp health.

First, let us explore the different reasons behind hair loss.

Male pattern baldness affects about 50 percent of men and about 40 percent of women will experience some type of hair thinning by age 50. (1)

It is common for us to lose anywhere from 50-100 hairs from our scalp daily. (2) Increased hair shedding may occur across the entire head or in patches. Depending on the root of the issue, such as postpartum hair loss, hair may grow back on its own with time, without intervention such as PRF.

A few common hair loss types and causes include:

  • Androgenic alopecia due to genetic predisposition and hormonal stimulation (3)

  • Age-related hair loss

  • Alopecia areata

  • Illness and high-stress

  • Hormones (including childbirth)

  • Medications

Let’s dive deeper into PRF for use as a natural hair restoration treatment:

What is Platelet-Rich Fibrin?

Platelet-rich fibrin, is used in a variety of aesthetic treatments outside of hair loss including facial treatments for volume loss, thinning or darkening of the under eye area, muscle injury and repair as well as oral surgery. (4) It helps to accelerate the healing of tissue and reduces inflammation.

Considered to be a completely natural substance, PRF does not require a gelify-ing agent. (5) It is simply a by-product of blood that is rich in platelets and the molecules that signal and communicate between cells.

To better understand how we can use PRF in hair loss treatment and what you can expect, we consulted Integrative PRF practitioner, Dr. Lawren Chan:

How often do I need to receive treatments?

Treatments are done approximately four to six weeks apart. Patients will typically need a minimum of three to four treatments.

After I have had my initial treatment, do I need to come back?

Annual follow-ups are recommended for long-lasting results.

Are there any side effects?

After treatment, the scalp can feel tender, swollen, hot or itchy. Generally the discomfort is limited to the treatment itself. Treatments last about fifteen minutes.

How long will it take me to see results?

Noticeable results take about three to six months.

Do I have to do anything else to support hair growth?

You can use PRF alone to support hair growth. For some, addressing underlying issues like vitamin or mineral deficiencies, hormone imbalances or stress can impact the results.

Results can be amplified with the use of other topical treatments that include minoxidil.

Some PRF treatment for hair loss benefits include:

  • Hair growth stimulation

  • Can be used on most people

  • Non-invasive

  • Natural

  • Minimal side effects

Practitioners at Integrative Naturopathic Medical Centre take a whole-body approach to hair loss and will often utilize nutrition and lifestyle adjustments alongside PRF for hair loss treatment.
