Microneedling with Exosomes, PRP, and PRF: Unlocking Your Skin and Hair Potential

Wellness, Skin Health, Regenerative Medicine
My favourite treatment at the moment is combining exosomes with microneedling - this is a powerful procedure that offers numerous benefits for both skin rejuvenation and hair restoration. Since incorporating exosomes, I have personally noticed increased recovery time and even glowier, more hydrated skin after microneedling.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, involves using a device with fine sterile needles to create micro-injuries in the skin or scalp. This process stimulates the body’s natural healing response, promoting collagen and elastin production – key proteins essential for maintaining healthy skin and hair. Skin rejuvenation and hair growth promotion is further enhanced when microneedling is combined with exosomes, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), or Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF).

What are Exosomes?

Exosomes are tiny messenger vesicles secreted by cells to facilitate cell-to-cell communication. Rich in proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, they play a vital role in healing and regeneration while influencing cellular behaviour. When applied topically during and after microneedling, exosomes can penetrate the skin and significantly enhance treatment outcomes.

How Do Exosomes Work Topically?

Enhancing Cell Communication:
Exosomes carry growth factors that
stimulate nearby cells, promoting healing.
Reducing Inflammation:
Their anti-inflammatory properties minimize post-treatment redness.
Supporting Regeneration:
Exosomes accelerate new cell and
collagen production.
Boosting Hydration:
Exosomes improve moisture retention for better skin and scalp appearance.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma and Platelet-Rich Fibrin?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood, containing a high concentration of platelets that promote healing and tissue regeneration. The process involves drawing blood, processing it to concentrate the platelets, and applying it to the treated area during and after microneedling.

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)
PRF is similar to PRP, but has a higher concentration of fibrin and fewer artificial additives. It provides a more sustained release of growth factors and enhances healing by creating a supportive scaffold for tissue regeneration. PRP and PRF can both be injected into target areas that require extra support.

Benefits of Microneedling for Skin

Improved Texture and Absorption:
Smooths rough skin and minimizes appearance of pores. Micro-channels improve serum & treatment absorption.
Minimizes Scars:
Significantly reduces acne scarring and other scarring types.
Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles:
Stimulates collagen production helping
to diminish fine lines and wrinkles.
Safety and Application:
Suitable for many different skin types and various skin tones.

Benefits of Microneedling for Hair

Stimulates Hair Growth:
Activates hair follicles and promotes
hair growth.
Increases Blood Circulation:
Promotes blood flow to the scalp, delivering more nutrients.
Strengthens Hair Follicles:
Boosts collagen production for healthier
hair follicles.
Non-Invasive and Long Lasting:
Provides a non-surgical option for hair restoration. Sustains improvements in hair health and growth.

Where Can You Microneedle On The Body?

Face: For fine lines, wrinkles, and overall texture.
Neck: To reduce signs of aging.
Scalp: To promote hair growth.
Chest: For sun damage and improved elasticity.
Back: To treat acne scars and uneven texture.
Abdomen: To support healing of C-section scars or scarring post-surgery.

Indications For Microneedling

Microneedling is indicated for a variety of skin and hair concerns, making it a versatile treatment option. It can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, helping to combat visible signs of aging. For individuals with acne scars, microneedling improves the appearance of these scars by encouraging skin repair. It also promotes smoother skin texture, minimizes the appearance of enlarged pores, and helps reduce the visibility of stretch marks. Additionally, microneedling is beneficial for those experiencing hair thinning or loss, as it can stimulate hair growth by promoting healthier follicles.

Contraindications For Microneedling

While microneedling is generally well-tolerated, certain conditions may make it unsuitable for some individuals, so it's important to consult with your healthcare practitioner to discuss safety. Those with active infections, such as cold sores or skin infections in the treatment area, should avoid microneedling until the infection has cleared. Individuals with uncontrolled diabetes may experience impaired healing, making the procedure less advisable. Blood disorders, such as clotting issues, as well as skin conditions like active eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis in the treatment area, may also pose risks.

Additionally, those taking certain medications, including anticoagulants or immunosuppressants, or those who have recently used Accutane, should consult with a physician before proceeding. Pregnancy can make microneedling less suitable due to hormonal changes and sensitivities, and individuals who have recently had chemical peels or laser treatments should wait until their skin has fully recovered to avoid irritation.

Recommendations for Treatment Timing

The timing of microneedling treatments varies depending on each individual's unique skin concerns and goals. Generally, it is recommended to schedule treatments every 4 to 6 weeks. For skin concerns, 3 to 6 consecutive sessions are typically suggested to achieve optimal results, while hair-related issues may require 3 to 5 initial sessions, followed by maintenance treatments every few months.

It's important to consider seasonal factors, especially avoiding treatments during peak sun exposure months if you're prone to sunburn or hyperpigmentation. After treatment, mild redness, dryness, and peeling may occur, lasting about a week, so allowing adequate recovery time and avoiding important events immediately after a session is advised for the best outcome.

What Can You Expect After A Microneedling Treatment?

Avoid Sun Exposure:
Protect the treated area with SPF and limit intense sun exposure.
Skip Hair and Makeup Products:
Avoid using styling products or makeup for at least 24 hours.
Hydrate:
Keep the area moisturized with gentle,
non-irritating products.
Follow Professional Advice:
Adhere to aftercare instructions provided by your practitioner at the end of your session.
