Feeling Like Yourself Again: Hormone Support Through Perimenopause
HealthPerimenopause is a natural transition, but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer through it.
There are *many* tools that we as Naturopathic doctors have, that I utilize in my practice of busy moms looking for support with their hormones to support them during this phase of life!
For many women, fluctuating hormone levels can bring unexpected changes to sleep, mood, energy, metabolism, and overall well-being. If you’ve been feeling unlike yourself lately, your hormones may be playing a role!
Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is one tool that we can utilize to help women navigate this transition with greater comfort, enjoyment, and confidence.
What Is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?
BHRT uses hormones that are chemically similar or identical to those naturally produced by the body. As Naturopathic doctors, we primarily utilize estrogen and progesterone, and refer when appropriate for testosterone. These hormones can be an extremely useful tool to help reduce the symptoms commonly associated with fluctuating hormone levels in women in their mid 30's and beyond.
Who Can Benefit?
BHRT may be beneficial for women experiencing:
• Hot flashes and night sweats
• Insomnia or other sleep disturbances
• Mood changes and irritability
• Vaginal dryness or discomfort with intimacy
• Period changes
• Joint stiffness and pain
• Many other disruptive symptoms associated with perimenopause
How Can Naturopathic Doctors Help?
Hormone therapy is just one tool in our toolbox for supporting perimenopause, and is not appropriate for everyone. Therefore, treatment decisions should consider individual
symptoms, medical history, and personal preferences.
Having the benefit of longer visits with you, Naturopathic doctors like myself with appropriate prescribing authority have a really big role in supporting women through this journey! Taking a comprehensive history, family history, menstrual history, symptom overview, and treatment goals, allows us to be really particular about what type, form and dose of hormone is being prescribed.
When indicated, laboratory testing may help identify other conditions contributing to symptoms.
You Deserve to Feel Like Yourself
Perimenopause doesn't have to mean putting your health and well-being on hold, and suffering through this phase. With personalized, evidence-informed care, you can better understand your changing hormones and explore treatment options that fit your needs!
