Complex Chronic Disease
Complex chronic diseases are conditions that affect multiple systems in the body.
Because these illnesses can impact the immune system, nervous system, musculoskeletal system, and digestive tract simultaneously, they are frequently misunderstood or misdiagnosed.
OverviewMany chronic conditions are driven by ongoing inflammation, immune imbalance, impaired energy production, or unresolved stress within the body. | BenefitBy identifying contributing factors and patterns within the body, we aim to reduce symptom burden, improve function, and support long term resilience. |
About
About Complex Chronic Diseases
Living with a complex chronic condition can feel isolating and exhausting. Symptoms may shift, overlap, or defy clear explanations. You may have been told your tests look “normal” while your body tells a very different story. For many, the journey includes years of searching for answers, managing uncertainty, and carrying an invisible burden that others may not see.
Complex chronic illness does not follow a straight line, and it rarely fits neatly into one diagnosis. Some conditions are visible, many are not. What they share is the profound impact they can have on daily life, energy, identity, and sense of well-being. At Integrative, we recognize that each experience is real, valid, and deserving of thoughtful, compassionate care.
Our Approach
An Integrative Approach to Complex Chronic Disease
At Integrative, care for complex chronic disease is individualized, systems-based, and collaborative. Our doctors focus on identifying root contributors and supporting the body’s capacity to heal, rather than addressing symptoms in isolation.
Working together means moving at a pace your body can tolerate. Treatment plans are shaped by the cause and duration of illness, the systems involved, and the severity of symptoms, and they are adjusted over time based on response and resilience. This often includes periods of reassessment, refinement, and rest, acknowledging that progress is not always linear.
Our role is to help you make sense of what your body is communicating, to guide you through options with clarity and care, and to walk alongside you as your health evolves. You are not expected to have all the answers. You are met where you are, supported with intention, and treated as a whole person, not a collection of diagnoses.
When multiple systems are under strain, symptoms can persist
Complex chronic disease often develops when immune, hormonal, neurological, digestive, or metabolic systems are out of balance at the same time. This can lead to ongoing symptoms such as fatigue, pain, brain fog, digestive issues, mood changes, or poor recovery that do not resolve with single symptom treatments.
Comprehensive care helps restore balance across the whole system
By identifying and addressing underlying contributors such as inflammation, immune dysregulation, nutrient depletion, infections, toxins, or nervous system stress, a comprehensive treatment approach can support improved energy, resilience, and long-term function. This whole-body focus allows care to evolve as the body responds and heals over time.
Comprehensive Testing
Understanding complex chronic illness often requires looking beyond standard investigations. At Integrative Fort Langley, our doctors use comprehensive functional testing to gather deeper insight into what may be contributing to ongoing symptoms. This testing helps reduce guesswork and supports more informed, individualized care.
Depending on your health history and presentation, testing may explore areas such as underlying infections, mold-related illness, gastrointestinal imbalances, immune function, and metabolic or inflammatory patterns. Results are reviewed carefully in context, recognizing that no single test tells the full story, but together they can help guide a more intentional path forward.
Depending on your presentation, testing may explore areas such as:
- Chronic or Recurrent Infections
- Environmental and Mold Toxin Exposures
- Gastrointestinal and Digestive Conditions
- Other System Imbalances

-
What kinds of testing might be recommended for chronic diseases?
Depending on your history and symptoms, your doctor may recommend private testing to assess chronic infections, immune function, inflammation, gastrointestinal health, mold or environmental toxin exposure, nutrient status, or hormonal balance. Testing is always discussed in advance and tailored to your individual situation.
-
Do I need a formal chronic disease diagnosis before booking an appointment?
No. Many patients come to us without a clear diagnosis but know something is not right. Part of our role is to help investigate possible contributors, clarify patterns, and guide next steps through appropriate testing and clinical assessment.
-
How long does treatment for chronic disease usually take?
There is no one-size-fits-all timeline. Healing complex chronic illness often takes time, and progress may be non-linear. Our focus is on meaningful improvement, functional gains, and quality of life, rather than rushing the process.
-
What is considered a complex chronic disease?
Complex chronic disease refers to long-standing conditions that involve multiple body systems and do not resolve with short-term or single-modality treatment. This can include chronic infections, autoimmune conditions, persistent fatigue, pain syndromes, neurological symptoms, and multi-system inflammatory or immune-mediated illnesses.
-
Is complex chronic disease treatment covered by MSP or Extended Health Plans?
Treatment is provided by a Naturopathic Doctor, and will be billed as such. If you qualify for Premium Assistance through MSP, you may qualify for a small percentage of your visit cost to be covered by MSP.
Most Extended Health plans have coverage that can be applied to naturopathic visits; however, most plans have a limit to their coverage per year. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly prior to your visit to determine your coverage.
-
How much does treatment for complex chronic disease cost?
The cost of treatment will vary depending on what your treatment plan entails and varies from patient to patient as our care is individualized. Our Patient Care Coordinators can provide a quote prior to booking an appointment.
-
Is it normal to feel overwhelmed, discouraged, or exhausted by the process of seeking diagnosis or treatment for a chronic disease?
Yes. Living with chronic illness can be emotionally and mentally taxing. These feelings are valid and common. Our care approach recognizes the emotional impact of chronic disease and aims to provide support, clarity, and realistic hope.
