Iron Infusion Therapy in Fort Langley

Iron is an essential component of systemic oxygen delivery and energy production.

Iron deficiency is a nutritional disorder that occurs when the body lacks sufficient iron to function properly. This condition is quite common and can lead to a variety of health issues if left untreated.

Overview

Iron infusions are a medical procedure in which iron is delivered intravenously into a vein to help treat iron-deficiencies such as anemia.

Benefits

While iron deficiency anemia can be treated with dietary changes and iron supplements (in pill or liquid form), some cases require a higher dose with a faster delivery.

No. Referrals are not necessary, but anyone seeking an iron infusion will need to first have a screening appointment to ensure the therapy is right for your treatment plan.

Clinical improvement starts around 3 to 4 days after your first treatment and can continue until 12 to 14 days after the infusion(s).

  • Are there any side effects to having an iron infusion?

Most patients do not experience any side effects. In some cases, mild flushing or a light rash may occur during the infusion. This is typically resolved by slowing the infusion rate.

A small number of patients, approximately 1 in 10, may experience flu-like symptoms such as muscle or joint aches for up to a few days following the infusion. These symptoms are benign and self-limiting and often improve with over-the-counter supportive measures.

Some patients may also notice a temporary darkening of urine following treatment. This is expected, harmless, and resolved on its own without intervention. If you have any questions or concerns after your infusion, our Integrative Fort Langley team is available to support you by phone or email.

There is no specific preparation necessary for an iron infusion. We do recommend wearing warm, comfortable clothing and arriving well hydrated to your appointment as this can help establish an IV.

  • Is it safe to have iron infusion therapy while I am pregnant and/or breastfeeding?

IV iron therapy is a safe and effective option for restoring iron levels and treating iron deficiency anemia, particularly in the postpartum period. It may be recommended when oral iron supplements are ineffective, poorly absorbed, or not well tolerated due to side effects.

If you are pregnant or recently postpartum, it is important to discuss iron treatment options with your prenatal or primary care provider to determine what is most appropriate for your individual situation.
