What are food sensitivities and allergies?
While food allergies often cause immediate and obvious reactions, food sensitivities are poorly understood by most people, even those that have them. To put it simply, foods that you are sensitive to are those that you have difficulty digesting.
That means that you may be eating foods that you can’t properly break down, which can aggravate your immune system and compromise your physical and emotional health.
The symptoms of food sensitivities are varied and may include:
- Skin irritations
- Joint pain
- Mood swings
- Sinus/lung congestion
“The immune system is like the gatekeeper to our health. Inappropriate immune responses allow us to get sick and develop symptoms.”Dr. Maya Kuczma, N.D.
Consuming foods you are sensitive to over the long term can lead to more serious symptoms and illnesses. The time is now to find what you are sensitive to and modify your eating.
Our Naturopathic Physicians can identify what foods you are sensitive to, detoxify your body and help you create a new diet that will keep you healthy and vital.
The basic strength of our immune system can be easily assessed. Just ask yourself, how many colds did I get this year? How many cold sores? Warts? Recurrent infections?
Building off the answers to those questions, we can further investigate the risk factors that could be compromising your immune system with several laboratory tests and exams.
Factors that affect our immune system
- Stress level and how we cope
- Nutrient availability and absorption
- Alcohol, drug and tobacco use
- Sleep quality
- Diet and exercise
- Body weight and caloric intake
Once we assess the above issues, we can follow through with one of two treatment paths.
1. Immune Enhancement
In this treatment path, we bolster your immune system by encouraging a healthy lifestyle and treat a variety of conditions that may be impairing it, such as:
- Acute or chronic infections
- Allergic responses (dietary or airborne)
- Chronic degenerative illnesses that compromise the immune system (e.g. cancer)
- Chronic inflammatory reactions
2. Immune Modulation
Immune Modulation is selected for patients with autoimmune disorders that create antibodies to things that they themselves produce. This can be damaging to these patients body’s producing persistent inflammation as seen with systemic lupus erythmatosus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma and autoimmune thyroid dysfunction.
Immune Support Therapies
We may employ one or more of these therapies to support your immune system based on the treatment path required:
Immune Support Therapies
Stage one – Sensitivity Testing and the Food Elimination Program
We will use the most innovative technology to test you for up to 126 common foods to find out which ones are aggravating your systems and contributing to your symptoms.
We will then put you on a food elimination program, removing all the foods that you showed sensitivity to from you diet for three to six weeks. Don’t worry-we’ll build you a list of alternative foods based on your tastes, lifestyle and other health factors.
During this time your major organs of detoxification, the liver and kidneys, will be given a chance to rest, allowing your body to shed its stored toxins and begin to rebalance itself.
Stage two – Retest and Diet Planning
Once the food elimination program is complete we will retest you for the foods you’ve been avoiding. If they still cause a reaction in you, they are probably your primary sensitivities.
Moving forward, you will have a better understanding of what foods help you function at your best and which trigger your symptoms. With this knowledge, we can work with you to tailor your eating with less strict restrictions so your food nourishes your health and doesn’t impair your immune system.
