Prevent Aging, Rather Than Chase It.

As a Naturopathic Doctor, preventative medicine is my niche. After all, it is much easier to prevent disease rather than chase it. When we hear the word anti-aging medicine, it is not uncommon for our minds to extrapolate that to mean plastic surgery, face lifts, botox, fillers, tummy tucks and unnecessary hormone replacement. While there is nothing wrong with cosmetic surgery, and I myself will occasionally indulge in a little wrinkle release, when I think of anti-aging I think of:

  • Anti-Oxidants
  • Skin support
  • Regenerative joint care
  • Anti-inflammatory diet
  • Blood sugar management
  • Weight management
  • Exercise
  • Mineral and nutrient status
  • Depuration (elimination) status
  • Memory protection
  • Hormone balance
  • Thyroid function
  • Healthy libido and stamina
  • Cancer prevention
  • Natural aesthetics

Though we cannot live forever and can only push age so far, the ultimate goal of anti-aging is living at an optimal quality of life until the day we must inevitably expire.

Aging doesn’t need to be difficult or hard but it is a fact that our telomeres (components of our DNA that allow for replication and repair) shorten with each cell cycle, and the amount of times a cell can safely and effectively replicate decreases over time. Can we prevent this shortening? No, but we can affect how quickly it occurs and mediate the effects of this degeneration in order to maintain optimal health. Multiple lifestyle factors as well as DNA damage caused by high oxidative stress will affect telomere length and drastically affect both our lifespan and disposition toward disease.*

Over time we lose fat pads and collagen in our face and skin, wrinkles develop, scars build up over time, and our joints start to feel the wear and tear of every day use; our arteries may develop plaques and organ function may decline. Most of this can be decelerated or prevented if managed in advance.  In accordance with the principles of naturopathic medicine, we aim to remove the cause and give the body what it needs. Although we cannot remove time as a factor, we can remove insults to the system that promote inflammation and hence degeneration and give the body advanced nutrition tailored to its needs.
