Spring has sprung! This time of year is a natural time for change and we often intuitively feel the need to lighten up. We want to clean out those closets, wear brighter colors again, and lighten up our diets. Many of my clients note that for the first time in months, salads, juices, and smoothies are somehow a bit more appealing.
Detoxification is something that the body does naturally – the liver, kidneys, the GI tract, lymphatic system, and skin are all involved in these processes. Unfortunately, in modern day, these organs of detoxification and elimination are often overburdened with toxins that need to be dealt with and they could use a little more attention and TLC on a regular basis to ensure proper functioning.
For many, a week long (or longer) detoxification or cleansing protocol seems intimidating, overwhelming, and stressful. The effects of these short detoxification programs can be very helpful in boosting overall health (1) but aren’t always realistic. But don’t worry, my Spring Detox Tonic will help support your body’s natural detoxification processes without the big commitment of a “cleanse”.
The ingredients in my detox tonic recipe help to support healthy liver function, which is our main organ of detoxification, giving you that liver boost every single day.
- Turmeric – supports healthy liver tissue and liver problems (2); look for the fresh root at specialty grocery stores. If you can’t find it, use 1 tsp. of ground turmeric instead.
- Dandelion root – ready made tea bags with this herb are easy to find at most health food stores and grocery stores. If you can’t find it, you can purchase it online here . Dandelion helps with detoxification as is contains nutrients needed in liver processes as well as can maintain the proper flow of bile and reduce inflammation. (3)
- The coconut oil and black pepper are included to help improve the absorption of the active phyto-nutrient, curcumin, found in turmeric. (4)
Every Day Spring Detox Tonic Recipe
- 1 Dandelion root tea bag
- 1/2-inch piece fresh turmeric root
- 1 tsp. coconut oil
- Dash of black pepper
- Boiling water
Boil water and steep tea and fresh turmeric for about 5 minutes. Remove tea-bag and turmeric. Stir in 1 tsp coconut oil and add a few grinds of fresh black peppercorns.
NOTE – this daily detox tonic may not be appropriate for you if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have an established liver disease or any other serious illness. Please consult with your practitioner first.
